Laboratory Assistant, Specimen Management & Cataloging

Department/Group: Biology
Location: On-site South San Francisco, CA
Position Type: Part time

Job Description

Role and Responsibilities

We are seeking a detail-oriented Lab Assistant to manage our growing repository of biological specimens. Our team is dedicated to developing transformative therapeutics for immune-mediated diseases, and this role ensures that our critical research samples—including blood fractions, tissue biopsies, and cell lines—are meticulously organized, tracked, and stored.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inventory Management: Catalog incoming and existing biological specimens into the Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Sample Processing: Assist in the basic preparation, aliquoting, and labeling of samples (PBMCs, serum, plasma, etc.) while maintaining strict aseptic technique.
  • Cryogenic Organization: Maintain the physical organization of -80°C freezers and liquid nitrogen (LN2) tanks.
  • Data Integrity: Perform regular audits of specimen records to ensure 100% accuracy between physical vials and digital databases.
  • Compliance: Adhere to Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) protocols and ensure all specimens are handled according to HIPAA and institutional guidelines.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Education: Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. in Biology, Biotechnology, Immunology, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: Familiarity with basic lab equipment (pipettes, centrifuges) and "cold chain" sample handling.
  • Software: Proficiency in Microsoft Excel; previous experience with LIMS or inventory software is a major plus.
  • Meticulousness: An almost "obsessive" attention to detail regarding labeling and documentation.

Preferred Skills

  • Prior experience handling human primary samples or immune cell populations.
  • Understanding of the sensitivity of immune-related specimens (e.g., knowledge of how freeze-thaw cycles impact sample viability).

This job requires candidate to be on-site.

Salary Range: $25 to $35 per hour.
